ACCESSIBILITY ADVISORY GROUP
The MCA will form an Accessibility Advisory Group, made up of representatives of the community who are mobility-, vision-, or hearing-impaired, or whose children suffer from disabilities, including autism, or limited hearing or vision. The advisory group will be invited to join MCA staff members at regular intervals to assess the museum’s accessibility offerings and efforts both onsite and online.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY INITIATIVE
MCA Stage has developed a Diversity and Inclusivity Initiative, which formalizes an accessibility plan for the hearing impaired that recognizes the diversity of needs within the community and builds a program integrating access to all MCA programming. The 2015/2016 plan encompasses: ASL-interpreted and open-captioned performances, a community advisor, access ticket subsidies and a direct mailer. Inclusion and diversity are intrinsic values of MCA’s mission. The initiative will build a program that engages people with hearing impairments at a broad range of performances and expands MCA’s accessible facilities and programs, employing high quality ASL interpreters and open-captioning technology, staff training and external communications.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago leads a consortium of U.S. and international museums exploring the potential of electronic labels (e-ink) to deliver personalized interpretive content on gallery walls. The group—including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Broad Museum, the Peabody-Essex Museum, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Museums of Paris—is developing hardware (screens and housings) and software (to create and control text and images)—in preparation for the launch of in-gallery prototypes in late 2015-early 2016. The MCA hopes to be among the first prototype sites nationwide.
E-labels will provide vision-impaired visitors with an opportunity to see large-print labels on gallery walls; the labels will appear automatically based on sensor-based communications between devices carried by visitors or cards provided to them on arrival. The same technology will allow participating museums to provide foreign language texts, or content in the voices of artists or visitors. In a later stage of the research, the consortium expects to use the location- based sensor technology to provide voice description to handheld devices carried by visitors.
RELAUNCH OF MCACHICAGO.ORG
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago will relaunch its website (www.mcachicago.org) in August, 2015. The site will comply with ADA regulations for digital accessibility, including captioning of and visual description for all new video content; transcription for audio content; full reader compatibility; and design in compliance with best accessible practices for contrast, color, and layout. The museum has engaged Sina Bahram, one of the museum community’s top accessibility experts, to provide accessibility consulting as we prepare to launch the new site. Sina will provide technical training for the web design and development team and training in visual description for the museum’s editorial, digital, education, and visitor services staffs.
STAFF AWARENESS TRAINING
A community advisor will plan with and train administrative staff, house staff and ushers. A priority will be regular meetings for staff and volunteers to understand and meet the variation of needs, remove barriers to access and create a meaningful lasting relationship with the hearing-impaired community. This training and the implementation of ASL and open-captioning will set an example for efforts across departments to forge a unified, shared commitment to inclusive and diverse arts. Two-for-one ticket subsidies will encourage individuals’ attendance with family members and partners, and a direct mailer to all patrons integrating ASL and open-captioning performances and discounts will broaden external communications about MCA’s ongoing commitment to inclusive programming.
